John Constable (born in June 11, 1776, in East Bergholt, Suffolk, England ; died in March 31, 1837, in Hampstead, London, England) was a 19th-century British landscape painter considered a precursor to Impressionism.

Born into a family of wealthy millers on the River Stour, he drew most of his inspiration from the countryside of his native Suffolk, to the extent that the Dedham Vale area is still known as “Constable Country.”

An admirer of his contemporary Joseph Mallord William Turner, he painted mainly landscapes, following in the footsteps of the Romantic artists. His approach to landscape, based on the direct study of nature, careful observation of the effects of light and weather, and his famous studies of clouds (outdoor painting experiments: “skying”), broke with classical idealisation in favour of a more sensitive and atmospheric vision of reality.

After training at the Royal Academy in London, he developed large monumental compositions (The Hay Wain and The White Horse) which elevated landscape painting to the status of history painting through their format and ambition. Exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1824 onwards, he exerted a decisive influence, particularly in France, on the artists of the Barbizon School and, later, on artists such as Camille Corot, Alfred Sisley and the Impressionists, who were captivated by the vibrancy of his skies and his free brushwork focused on the sensation of light.
